Kelly Smith
I help high-achieving students discover, shape, and express their real stories so their college applications sound authentic, confident, and unmistakably their own.
About Me
I’m an experienced educator, writer, editor, and coach with a background in both academic and professional communication. I specialize in helping people organize their ideas, clarify their message, and write and speak with confidence.
My approach is thoughtful, encouraging, and intellectually rigorous. I believe strong communication is a skill anyone can build with the right guidance.
I have an undergraduate degree in biological anthropology cum laude from Harvard, a master’s degree in biology from Tufts Graduate School of Arts and Science, and a master’s degree in communication from Johns Hopkins University.
I have served as an alumna interviewer for Harvard College for more than 10 years. I know what makes a powerful college essay and a great interview.
I have given keynote addresses, workshops, talks, and presentations to groups from 10 to 500 — in person and online.
I have worked for more than 20 years as an executive and life coach and marketing consultant. I have published three books (two number 1 Amazon Bestsellers) and numerous articles. I am a podcast host and guest. I have also worked as a filmmaker, as the creator and director of a short film that was in the juried Three Rivers Film Festival, as a co-producer of the BAFTA Award-winning feature film Control (2007), and as the assistant editor on the award-winning documentary feature Introducing Brian Broome (2023).
I know how difficult it is to talk about yourself when you have multiple, seemingly disparate skills and passions. I am passionate about helping students identify the overarching themes in their life and confidently express who they really are — in a way that grabs attention and makes a powerful impact.
Families appreciate my structured, ethical approach and calm guidance during what can be a stressful time. Students value having a supportive, judgment-free space where their ideas are taken seriously and their voice is respected
My goal is not only to help students submit strong applications, but also to help them become more confident communicators — a skill that will serve them well in college and beyond.
